Our Embryology Team

Posted January 12, 2015 by NRM

Embryologists

Using the most sophisticated media and incubation equipment available, we work to ensure that embryos in our care develop in a quality-controlled, optimal environment. NRM embryologists use the precision Saturn V active laser, which enables safe and precise assisted hatching, and blastomere or trophectoderm biopsies for pre-implantation genetic screening.  This remarkable system reduces error and provides a safe, rapid and precise approach to embryo procedures.

Embryologists
From left to right — Haiying Chen MSC, Susan O’Brien MLT (ASCP), and Cal Wilkinson BSc, ELD/TS (ABB).

Haiying Chen MSc
Laboratory Supervisor and Quality Director

Haiying Chen has made significant contributions to the field of in-vitro maturation and oocyte vitrification research since 2005. Following completion of his Masters in Science in the Department of Experimental Medicine at McGill University (2004, Montreal, Canada), Haiying worked as an OB/GYN research associate at McGill University with a special interest in fertility preservation for pre-cancer treatment and for social purposes. He began his work in clinical embryology at McGill University, where he worked from 2008-10. From 2010 to 2014, he was the Director of the Embryology and Andrology Labs at OriginElle Fertility Clinic in Montreal, Canada, as well as director of the modified natural cycle IVF and oocyte vitrification programs. Haiying has authored or co-authored numerous publications on in-vitro maturation and oocyte vitrification, and has been invited to lecture at various international conferences. Dr. Chen obtained his medical degree (Bachelor’s in clinical medicine and Master’s in clinical medicine) from Beijing University Medical School, and completed a residency in General Surgery at Beijing University First Clinical Hospital.

Sue O’Brien MLT (ASCP)
Clinical Laboratory Senior Embryologist

Susan O’Brien is a native Vermonter who has been helping create families through IVF since 1995. With her extensive hands-on experience, board certification in ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology and MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) certification, she was integral in setting up our new state-of-the art laboratory at Northeastern Reproductive Medicine. Sue’s love of science led her to a degree in Medical Technology from Norwich University (1986), followed by several years working as a research assistant at the University of Vermont (1989-1995) prior to beginning her career in the IVF laboratory in 1995. Sue lives in Waterbury Center with her husband and two children aged 13 and 15, and a black Labrador retriever named Lucci.

Sue has worked in reproductive medicine through a period of tremendous progress: “I love my job… With the ever-changing technology and advancements in the field, there are always new procedures and new high-tech equipment in the lab; always something new to learn. But the thing I love the most about my job is when patients come back to the clinic to introduce their long-awaited baby. One look at that amazing little person, and knowing you had a small part in creating that life, that’s when it hits you….that’s what this is all about! It’s more than just science, so much more than just a job.”

Calvin Wilkinson BSc, ELD/TS (ABB)
Embryology/Andrology Technical Supervisor

Cal Wilkinson grew up in Michigan and graduated with degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Secondary Education from Eastern Michigan University. He began his career as an embryologist at the University of Michigan in 1987. Following his initial training, Cal worked for a private IVF practice in Ypsilanti, Michigan from 1998-2000. While in Ypsilanti, he earned certification as a Technical Supervisor in Embryology and Andrology from the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB). In September of 2000, he came to Vermont to work as the Senior Embryologist for Fletcher Allen Health Care (FAHC). During his 14 years at FAHC, he earned further certification as an Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD) from the ABB. Together with Haiying and Sue, Cal was integral in setting up our new lab at NRM, preparing us for our first cycles and IVF pregnancies! Cal currently lives in Essex Junction with his wife, two Chihuahuas, and multiple aquariums (In his spare time, Cal is an avid tropical fish aficionado.) Cal loves Vermont, and with his 26 years of experience in embryology, he provides a breadth of knowledge and experience to our Northeastern Reproductive Medicine team.
